SAN FRANCISCO, May 25, 2010 – The voter registration deadline for the June 8 Consolidated Statewide Direct Primary Election passed yesterday, but it is not too late for new citizens to register and vote. Under provisions of California elections law, people who become citizens between now and June 1 may register and vote in person at their local elections office.

Representatives from the San Francisco Department of Elections will be speaking at tomorrow’s U.S. Citizenship and Naturalization Services swearing-in ceremony at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland to inform new citizens from throughout the Bay Area about the special voting rules for new citizens. In addition to registering new citizens to vote, the representatives will be distributing fliers with the locations of Northern California elections offices and information on how to vote in the June 8 primary.

Anyone who becomes a citizen between May 24 and June 1 and who is otherwise eligible to vote can register and vote in the June 8 primary election, but must do both in person at their county elections office by June 1. New citizens must present their Certificate of Naturalization, and will then be allowed to register and vote on site.

More information on voting in the June 8 primary election is available at www.sfelections.org
